The Fire Brigade is struggling to contain and extinguish two major wildfires, which broke out in forested areas on the island of Kefalonia early on Thursday morning.

According to the Fire Brigade the first fire broke out in the Nyfi forested area in Thinia on the island and has so far burned through more than 50 acres of trees. Ten fire fighters with two vehicles and a municipal water truck have been dispatched over there.

The second fire broke out in the Agios Konstantinos areas and has so far burned through 150 acres of trees. The Fire Brigade has deployed eleven firefighters, who are supported by municipal employees and water trucks.

The Regional Commander of Fire Services in the Ionian Islands Efthimios Georgakopoulos told the Athens-Macedonia News Agency that it has not yet been determined what caused these two fires, adding that major efforts are being made to extinguish them.

Mr. Georgakopoulos also reported that two aircraft and a helicopter are assisting the fire fighters on the ground.
