Hellenic Red Cross Volunteer Samaritans History

The Volunteer Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards Corps of the today’s Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguard Sector of Hellenic Red Cross, was founded in 1931 in Athens us the Volunteer Stretcher Bearers – Samaritans School.

The first Stretcher Beares Team of the Hellenic Red Cross was founded by the Hellenic Boys Scouts in 1916.

Today the Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards Sector of Hellenic Red Cross is the biggest Volunteer Organization providing First Aid and Rescue Services in Greece.

The Volunteers Samaritans and Rescuers of the Hellenic Red Cross are providing daily First Aid Services in numerous sports and cultural activities and during emergencies they are collaborating with the General Secreteriat of Civil Protection of Greece and the Fire Brigade to provide Rescue Services.

Today the Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards Sector of Hellenic Red Cross is using a strong network of 44 branches nationwide having in its capacity near 4.500 active First Aid Volunteers, Rescuers, Lifesavers, SAR Dogs, Medics, First Aid and Rescue Instructors and Special Consultants.

The main tasks of the Volunteer Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards Sector of Hellenic Red Cross are:

  • Search and Rescue
  • Disaster Response and Releif – First Aid Services
  • First Aid and CPR trainings towards the general public
  • Various environmental tasks
  • Disaster management and risk management for emergencies.
  • Disaster Preparedness
  • Seaside First Aid Stations and Lifeguard Services…and many more!!!

The main available Training Schools of the Volunteer Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards Sector of Hellenic Red Cross are:

  • Samaritans and Rescuers School (basic) 15 months in duration
  • Junior Samaritans School 24 months in duration
  • School of Diving and Lifesaving 3 months in duration
  • Schools of Rescue Specialites from 2 weeks to 2 years in duration

The Education Department of the Volunteer Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards Sector of Hellenic Red Cross have an ISO 9001:2008 certification from the Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance for all the first aid, cpr, rescue and lifeguarding educational programs.

RESCUE TEAM

It was founded in 1986 and operates directly under the orders of the Central Comity of Hellenic Red Cross, while the monitoring, structure, training and mobilization have been assigned in the Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards Sector of the Hellenic Red Cross.

K9 SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM

It was founded in 2008 in cooperation with the Italian Red Cross and operates directly with the Rescue Team under the orders of the Central Comity of Hellenic Red Cross, while the monitoring, structure, training and mobilization have been assigned in the Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards Sector of the Hellenic Red Cross.

LIFEGUARDING AND DIVING SCHOOL

The Lifesaving and Diving School of the Hellenic Red Cross, is certified by the Hellenic State, having two governmental licenses for legal operation. Also it is the only School of Lifesaving in our country, which is certified by the International Lifesaving Federation as a Full Member. It was founded in 1974.

JUNIOR SAMARITANS SCHOOL

The Junior Samaritans School concerns Junior High School students and is a two year training in basic first aid and rescue skills, environmental protection, voluntarism and more…! It was founded in 1990.

PUBLIC TRAINING COURCES

From 1998 until today the Training Department of the Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards Sector performs the Training Courses for the general public in Basic First Aid and CPR/AED. Until today more than 60.000 people have being trained and certified.
