Authorities said two people went missing on Friday evening in Rhodes, as the Aegean Sea island was battered by gale force winds and heavy downpours which triggered floods.
An investigation has been launched by the Fire Brigade to trace a 27-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man who got stranded in their vehicle during the storm. A third man in the same vehicle was able to get out in time before the vehicle was swept away by the raging water.
Local officials responded to a similar incident and managed to rescue two individuals from a car. They also received about 130 phone calls to pump out flooded basements and evacuate motorists.
The heavy rainfall toppled trees which caused disruptions in the flow of traffic and brief power outages particularly in the northern section of the island. Flood waters are already receding and Greek meteorologists said weather conditions will improve gradually during the weekend.
