Prosecutor launches probe into flood deaths on Rhodes

26/11/2013

As rain began to fall again on Rhodes following flash flooding on Friday and Saturday, a prosecutor on the Dodecanese island ordered an investigation into how three people lost their lives in the storm.

Authorities on the island began on Monday counting the cost of the damage from the floods amid fears that there would more rainy weather this week.

However, much of the attention focused on the loss of life caused by the flooding and whether officials had been negligent in ensuring the island had adequate flood defenses.

The three people who lost their lives were identified as a 60-year-old man and his 54-year-old wife. A 27-year-old schoolteacher also drowned when her car was swept away.

A 53-year-old teacher has been missing since Friday and the search to find him continued on Monday.

At the same time Monday a lightning cause at least one fire in a near by plant.
